DYNAMIC SUSPENSIONS

Photomedia

Dynamic Suspensions investigates the nature of light and its interplay with the energy of human emotion. In my body of work, fluid, abstracted forms of dance are conveyed through a long exposure. My intention in layering motifs within each phrase of light was to create sequences that represent a lifetime of dance. These forms communicate the physicality that is central to my being: the vivid colour of connecting to one's inner self; waves of sadness and fear suspended before moving into explosive sharpness and finishing brightly. The dance of light is the driving force of my life's emotional frequency.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Vicki DaSilva, David Lebe, Bruno Mesrine.

Marker's Commentary

Dynamic Suspensions is a large-scale photographic single work on vinyl. Energetic light patterns are suspended across the vinyl surface and there are hidden moments of human interaction as the dancer moves between the arcing colours of light. The audience is invited to the dance narrative to follow the shadowed figure across the darkened vinyl surface in a dance tracing the artist’s experience of emotion. The changing colours of light and levels indicate evolving mood across the length of the photograph created through the knowing camera handling of the 'bulb' long exposure. On close observation the patterns of light are gently mirrored beneath the dancer’s feet reflective of the undertow that emotional journeys often bring. The refined digital postproduction supports the sweeping actions of body and light, carefully arranged and successfully composited on an ambitious and engaging large-scale body of work.
