THREADS AND COLOURS OF AUSTRALIA
Painting
Fabric, wood, thread, paint
My body of work examines the fragility and beauty of nature. Using natural materials, layered textures and abstracted landscape forms I represent how delicate the environment is. Inspired by Australian artists, I document my process with the intention of encouraging audiences to understand my ideas and to connect with the changing natural world.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Fred Williams, Hossein Valamanesh, John Olsen, John Wolseley, Kate Dorrough, Luke Sciberras.
Marker's Commentary
Threads and Colours of Australia is a visually poetic and conceptually sensitive exploration of memory, place, and the shifting relationship between reality and recollection within the Australian landscape. Using abstracted forms and a restrained yet evocative use of colour, the work immerses the audience in atmospheric environments that exist between the tangible and the remembered. The artist’s refined material practice transforms the landscape into an emotional and psychological space, inviting contemplation of the transient nature of memory and human connection to the natural world. The moody and softened treatment of the landscape generates a dreamlike visual language that dissolves clear distinctions between observed reality, memory and imagined experience. Through layered textures, subtle tonal transitions, and fluid paint application, the work evokes the fragmented and fleeting qualities of memory. The abstraction of form allows the audience to navigate the composition intuitively, encouraging reflection, interpretation and emotional engagement rather than fixed narrative understanding.
An accomplished understanding of composition and spatial arrangement is evident in the interplay between colour and atmospheric depth. The artist sensitively combines hints of clarity and ambiguity, creating moments of reflection that sustain audience engagement across the work. A notable strength of Threads and Colours of Australia lies in its ability to capture the essence of landscapes without relying on direct representation. Instead, the work communicates through suggestion, atmosphere, and emotional association, positioning the Australian landscape as both a physical environment and a repository for personal and collective memory. The exploration of spaces “in-between”, between memory and reality, abstraction and recognition, presence and absence, gives the work significant conceptual depth. The work engages audiences in a contemplative reflection on the enduring relationship between landscape, memory, and identity.
